My 3 years old daughter is during toilet training it is about 5 days no defication. The doctor said you continue with vegetabel and encouraging her to sit in toilet, but it hasn't worked. I fear about what happens in the end of this if she can't poo? Is there any side efect for her bowel?

Is there anybody to have like this toddler and could help me?

Thank you alot for your advice

  1. With babies, we used glycerin suppositories if they were constipated. Normally, I'd advise patience. Sit her down on the toilet and read to her -we used to read toilet training books like "Everyone Poops" by Taro Gomi to our kids.

Three days is a long time to "hold it." If she's just not ready, you could try putting her back in diapers (I KNOW, it's going backwards). Our three year old got really mad when we did that and cried that she didn't want to wear them - so she figured out the toilet thing pretty fast because she didn't want to be the "baby." She knew her older siblings used the toilet, so maybe there was some modeling or jealousy or something going on.

    Good Luck.

  2. I don't have a baby. But I heard my mom told me before that well, I didn't have any problems when she started encouraging us to use the toilet bowl. the only effect my mom told me was that I pooped more from eating vegetables :)

    Hope it could help :)

  3. Get her to take some fiber rich baby foods too like yogurts, oatmeals, cereals, etc. and plenty of water.   Don't be afraid, she will eventually p**p.  Just continue with the doctor's advise.

  4. Try veggies and fruits specifically the ones that begin with "P"s such as peach, prunes, plums, peas, potato, pears etc. And keep her far away from things like rice, rice cakes, bananas etc. (food items that are usually used as antidotes for diarrhea)  If that still doesn't work, talk to your Dr. about giving her Mira-lax. It does wonders, but definitely needs a Dr.'s prescription --- don't try it against your pediatrician's advice! (because it can backfire.)

  5. I went through this last year - horrible, isn't it.

My usual warning, in brief: Miralax, don't use it!  See the Miralax Yahoo Group for reasons why.

I say make sure she's getting all the fruit and veg recommended above - which will keep her bowels active - but if she's still obstinately witholding I'm afraid you'll have to give her the glycerine suppositories (repeatedly).  She'll put up a fight about it, but remember they are the least addictive/least side-effecting medicaments you can use, and

I guarantee one glycerine suppository will make her do a smelly in under 20 minutes!
