Hi I have a 13 month old girl. She has almost 12 teeth. She eats almost everything, chicken, meatloaf, waffles, cheerios, crackers, french toast,cheese.. But when it comes to textures like wip cream, mashed potatoes, oatmeal or anything "wet" jelly, jello, bananas, she gags and will get sick. Almost like she is choking? I talk to her ped. at her 12 month app and they said to wait until 15 months, that maybe she just didn't like those foods. But I am getting a little worried.

Has anyone had this prob. with their toddler?

  1. You daughter is having a sensory intergration problem.  The textures just don't feel right to her.  She may never like those foods or she may over time learn to like them.  My exstepdaughter wouldn't eat anything with potatoes because the texture.  My oldest son won't eat anything that has certain textures.  It really isn't a big deal, there are plenty of adults that won't eat certain foods because of texture.  I know many people that won't eat pears just because of their texture.

  2. Does she play with sand?  Play-Doh?  Anything with a texture?

I wonder if she has a sensory issue.  I would contact your local Early Intervention and ask them what they think.  If nothing else, they can come and evaluate her and see if she does in fact have one.  If its something that can be helped now, then its worth it.  Good luck.

  3. No. She may just have problems with those textures with her gag reflex. Slimey food makes me sick.

  4. she doesn't need pureed foods.  follow up with the pediatrician.

  5. the texture probably makes her feel sick.. i don't think it's the food..
