  1. Children under 18 traveling with their parents within the U.S. are specifically excluded from needing any I.D.  See site below to read for yourself. If you are traveling internationally, she needs a passport.

  2. If your daugther doesn't have a passport, a birth certificate should work.

  3. Call the airline that your flying with, they should be able to answer your question, or you may want to try contacting TSA or the airport your flying out of.

Just to be on the safe side, yes you should take the child's birth certificate with you, and the child's social security card if she has one.

  4. Take the birth certificate with you. It's better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.

  5. Be extremely careful if you carry a birth certificate with you, and don't show it unless you really need to!  They are prime targets for muggers and pickpockets, who then sell them to people involved in identity theft.  Personally, I think you should get a State ID, and a passport, use them, and leave the birth certificate in a lock box.  Meanwhile, please go to the TSA web to see what the TSA requirements are to identify minor children!  The State Department web site has excellent information about travel requirements, too!

  6. Yes, bring her Birth Certificate, you can also get her a state ID, I did that once for my then 4 year old, easier to travel since it has a picture.
