Question:

Toddler speech therapy?

I have a happy and healthy toddler two and a half years old. He is now slowly starting to form sentences, but not a lot. He understands well, and does talk, but only some of his words are understandable. The last 3 or 4 weeks he seemed to have made a lot of progress.

Been to see the dr today for something else, and he told me that my boy needs speech therapy. Apparantly at this age he should be able to converse well. What is your experience/opinion?

  2. Hi there! Expressively, here is what a two and half-year-old typically can say: at least 50 meaningful words, produce two-word phrases frequently, and imitate three-word phrases with ease.

If you do have some concerns and you live in the states, you can have your child evaluated for free under the Early Intervention program. If he has a language delay, he can qualify to receive speech therapy for free. If you have more questions, please feel free to contact me.

  3. No, not necessarily. I didn't even say my first word until I was 3, and I'm well noted on my grammar and pronunciation. Who knows, he might be shy or just not wanting to talk.

  4. Check into the Speech Therapy. Your county should have an Early Intervention department. They will send an evaluation team out to your house to assess your son's development and speech. If he qualifies for care it is FREE and they come to your house. You don't have to drive anywhere! Good Luck.

  5. Just talk to him more and read to him and reward him if he can speak a sentence/word that you say, he's still young though so he'll learn eventually.

  6. Both my sons had speech therapy when they were small and in both cases it was good for their all round development. Dont get into a panic as it is quite normal nowadays. Go and see a Speech Therapist and let them assess him and take it from there.

ps What are you doing out of bed so early in the morning?

  7. cam and the other 2 under her are correct. My son has been in speech therapy since he was 27 months old...at 27 months old he said 10 words and maybe 1 2-word combination. he just really started to talk at 31 months old, but his enunciation is horrible so he is continuing in speech up until his third birthday. Next month he will be getting tested to see if he qualifies for special ed preschool once he turns 3.

my son tries to say pretty much anything, but even I need him to sign also so I can understand him...today he had to say "house" 4 times before I was able to understand him!! In speech he will play games and do other fun things to encourage him to practice the words correctly. my son is so smart, but I did not know it until he started to talk.  He really enjoys going to "miss jenny's" and playing games for 30 minutes at a time.
