Question:

Toe-Tap Drain Cap Removal?

I'm a renter and when I move into a new place, I like to remove the drain cover/cap and instead use a shower strainer/net strainer while I'm living there. The shower strainer/net catches all the hair (A LOT) from shampooing and all I have to do is remove it from the strainer with a toothpick every night or two. It helps keep the drain pipes unclogged, because without a strainer, I can clog/SLOW (very SLOW) the drain in approximately 3 days.

So the current place I'm in, has a toe-touch drain cap (looks something like http://www.jaclo.com/images/individualitem/J535.jpg). I'm not familiar with these and after Googling quite a bit of articles, the only thing I've been able to find is that people can unscrew them but HOW? I attempted to unscrew the top metal part by turning it counterclockwise as suggested, but it doesn't come off.

1) All all toe-touch drain caps removable? Or are some connected to the inside piping, requiring a more difficult removal process?

2) Any alternative solutions if the cap removal is too difficult?

Thanks!

I appreciate it.

  1. No, they should all be removable from the top.  Sometimes the cap spins and you have to grab the shaft underneath with pliers.  It may not be pretty, either.

If you happen to have a lift & turn, that would have a set s***w in it.  You'd have to hunker down & look closely to see it.

  2. most "TOE TOUCH STOPPERS" are removed by unscrewing them as you stated.  yours is probably very very tight.

you may need some channel lock 440's to help you grip and unscrew it.
