Toe injury puts Danny Care out of England’s 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign

England’s 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) preparations suffered a major blow as their talented and young scrum half, Danny Care, has been ruled out of their squad for England’s 2011 RWC campaign.
Care sustained a toe injury in England’s weekend encounter against Wales at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.
Care started Saturday, August 13, encounter against Wales from the bench. He substituted for Richard Wigglesworth at the scrum half position in the 29th minute of the game. He participated
in the rest of the 70 minutes of the game and in the process sustained an injury to his left toe.
Care’s injury and his subsequent non-availability for the England in their 2011 RWC was confirmed on Wednesday, August 17.
Following his impressive performance in the season and then for England in the Six Nations tournament earlier this year, Care could have easily secured a spot in England’s final 30 – man squad.
The English international scrumhalf has expressed his disappointment on the injury. He confirmed that the injury requires surgery and he has decided to undergo the operation. He said, “Absolutely
devastated about my injury but in the best hands for my op tomorrow.”
Care will undergo the procedure on Thursday, August 18, which will require another six to eight weeks to rehabilitate.
England’s team manager, Martin Johnson, has termed Care’s exclusion as a major setback for the team. He added, “We are all hugely disappointed for Danny who has worked extremely hard and has
been an important part of the squad throughout our Rugby World Cup preparations.”
Johnson further added, “He featured in both warm-up fixtures and was on course for selection so this injury is really disappointing for him personally and for us as a squad. Nobody wants to
see a player ruled out at this stage through injury and we all wish Danny a speedy recovery.”
The 24-year-old Care started his professional rugby union career with Leeds Carnegie in the 2003 season. He remained with the Leeds until the end of the 2005/06 season and played 14 games for
Leeds and scored 26 points.
At the start of the 2006/07 season, Care joined the Harlequins. He so far has made 93 appearances for Quins and has scored 131 point.
Yorkshire born Care progressed his way up in the England Seniors’ squad and he represented England Sevens squad in 2006 and later played for the Saxons in 2008.
Care made his international debut for England during the tour of New Zealand in 2008.  He has played 32 international games for England and has scored 18 points for them.
Ben Young is expected to earn a place in the Johnson’s final 30 –man squad in place of the injured Care.
