I started to install my toilet and the floor bolts look too long? Is this typical or have did i install it wrong? I do not think that the caps will cover it, should I go and get shorter bolts? Thanks

  1. I have had to do the exact thing on just about every toilet I installed. You will  have to cut them off to the proper length. Hacksaw works fine but be careful not to damage the threads because the nut will not longer fit in.  A better solution I found is to cut them with the Dremel using the regular cutting disks. Takes a few seconds to do, no risk to the threads and you won't have to worry about getting a vise to hold the bolts steady while you cut off the excess.

  2. Or cut them off with a small hacksaw.  I've seen  this done on This Old House.

  3. I am assuming that you are referring to the Johnny-bolts that come up through the floor.  The newer ones actually snap off after you get the nuts on so the cap can go over.  If not as suggested a hack saw to cut them will work fairly easy.

  4. cut them off to length-hacksaw/bolt cutters or dremel

  5. YOU CAN CUT THE BOLTS TO MAKE EM SHORT.GO TO ANY HOME IMPROVEMENT STORE AND BUY A PAIR OF BOLT CUTTERS OR IF YOU KNOW A PLUMBER YOU COULD BORROW THEIRS.

  6. Good answers,

    BUT

FIrst set the potty in place,

    then attache the nuts,

THEN cut off the excess length.
