We were told to measure from the wall to the centre of the flange (bolts). We got 11 3/4". The new toilets say that they are 12". It's on the second story so ripping up everything is not an option. Any ideas or help on our problem would be greatly appreciated. BTW...it's the only toilet in the house.

  1. new one will fit just careful when setting the tank-it can be in slight angle when setting

  2. I think you'll be fine, the 1/4" should make no difference.

  3. If the old toilet wasn't 2" away from the wall, it was a 12" rough and the new one will fit.

  4. The 12" stated on the new toilet is a measurement for the contractor.  It is call the rough in measurement and does not include the thickness of the drywall.

If you are still uncomfortable about this measurement you can dry assemble the toilet in another room and then measure the bolt location in relation to the distance from the wall to ensure the fit is okay.  To do the dry fit just set the bowl on the floor near a wall.  Then set the tank carefully on the bowl.  Slide the unit back so it is just touching the wall and then measure the distance to the holes.  They should be less than the 11 3/4 inches you have on the old toilet.

Don't forget to install a new wax ring with the new toilet and tighten the bolt very carefully and evenly so you don't crack the base of the bowl section.

    GOOD LUCK !!!

  5. just install it the 1/4" will not matter just becarful and do not over tighten the Johnny bolts or you will need another toytie

  6. You'll be okay with a standard 12" rough in toilet.

The next size down would be a 10" which is usually a special order item.
