Question:

Toilet flush lever question?

I recently had a toilet installed with a flush lever that I bought separately from the toilet. After the plumber left I realized that I must pull the flush lever UP to flush the toilet instead of the usual down direction. Is this how some flush levers are, or could the plumber have installed it incorrectly?

  1. it's not installed correctly. The chain that hooks to the handle to open the flapper is in the wrong position. If you paid someone for this I would call him back and tell him your problem.

  2. Remove the handle from the rest of the lever and flip it over then reinstall it. The metal part inside the toilet won't change, just change the lever itself.

  3. Carefully lift the cover off the toilet tank and take a look inside.  Don't be nervous, it's just clean water in there.  Most toilet levers work by pushing them down, which raises the lever arm inside.  This lever arm is usually attached by a small chain to a flapper value at the bottom of the tank.  When the arm goes up, the chain goes taut and the flapper value raises, opening the valve that allows the rush of water into the toilet and flushes it.

I am having a little trouble visualizing a situation where the standard handle could be installed upside down and still work by raising instead of lowering.  Open that lid and try to cypher it out....
