Toilet flush problem?

The Question:

What is the most common cause of a toilet that will start to flush strong, but then stop halfway through the flush, causing the flusher to "hold the lever?" This is not a new toilet.

Your Answer:

The flapper has become waterlogged and will not stay raised until 80% of the basin fills.

The refill tub has shifted, causing the effluent to force the flapper assembly closed.

Hardwater has built up on the flapper, causing it to be too heavy, and dropping too soon.

The lift rod has bent.

  1. Your description tells me that the chain/strap that lifts the flapper is not adjusted properly. It should have enough slack to allow the flapper to "just" seal. This will raise it all the way up when flushed and allow all the water to exit the tank.

  2. your terminology is wrong, flappers don't get waterlogged, nor get mineral deposit build up.lift rod attaches to tank ball (stopper) which holds water in tank till flushed ( 1950's toilet) hold flush handle (trip lever) down  thru entire flush and see if that gives proper flush, if it does, replace seal at bottom of douglas valve or flush valve whether its a flapper or other type of tank water holding seal

  4. Is this a Poll? Are you asking and answering your own Q? In any case I suspect it could be any or all of the suggestions you list. Have you checked, or are you soliciting more possibilities?

The internal hardware for a toilet, is likely one of the least expensive, easiest FIXES in a home.

    Just my two "sense"
