I just installed a nice cadet 3 American standard toilet and the tank had a gap of 1 inch by the wall behind it so I put a few shims of wood behind it with goop to secure it to the wall so it has less of a chance to rock or move , is this OK to do in the sense will I have problems down the road, now its just fine and works.?

  1. perfectly fine

  2. You may get some form of condensation and rot over the long haul- that is why they are commonly left unsecured.

  3. It's ok but you didn't need to do it most pottys have a gap behind them.....

  4. Should be fine.

I have worked on many that do not have the block installed, and they do not have any problems in that area.

Just make sure that the tank to bowl connection is firm, but not excessively tight.  I have seen the tanks shatter from over tightening.

(Then they call me in to install the new unit!)

  5. You do not need to secure the tank to the wall, and in fact, shouldn't...the big rubber seal and bolts used are enough to make the toilet more than strong enough...that is how they are designed...not to be mounted to a wall! Good luck, Goldwing
