Question:

Toilet won't flush, even with the use of a plunger

When it is flushed, a little water will come and go, but only some contents will go down each time (i.e. toilet paper). It WILL swirl a little bit, but wont go down quite all the way.

It might or might not be related, but after the tank fills up post-flush, immediately afterwords you can hear a loud "clunk" in the pipes inside the walls behind the toilet. Can someone help me please? Its driving me nuts and I cant afford to have a plumber out to my house!

  1. try plunging very short quick strokes. if that doesn't work, 2 options:

    1) snake which may or may not work

    2) remove toilet and flip, clear contents at bottom of toilet: obvious drawback: need some rudimentary plumbing skills, strength, strong stomach, but usually works if clog is in toilet

  2. Snake.

  3. Just resolved this problem myself this weekend.... provided you do not have little ones flushing foreign objects, this should work.

Resolved it by purchasing a GOOD toilet plunger... the regular cup type will not work.  Then roll up your sleeves and prepare yourself for some major plunging and flushing.... Short quick strokes work best.  Do not give up...  If it is partially flushing, you are not far from clearing the clog!

    Plunger - $8

    Closet Auger (snake) - $50

    Plumber - $125

    Doing it yourself - PRICELESS!!!

    Good Luck

  4. probably get a drain snake. Someone probably put a toothbrush, toy, etc... down the toilet and now some of the stuff can't get passed as easily.

  5. First of all try not to use the toilet for 24 hours.  Some of the toliet paper will disolve.  You can also try using a strainer or slotted spoon to scope up some of the mess in the toliet and throw it in the trash. Obviously, throw the spoon or strainer away afterwards. Then try plunging and flushing.  Also, the black pump style plungers at home depot for about 8 dollars work much better than a traditional one.
