  1. It's been several years since I was in the Netherlands but if you go out, dining or even use a public toilet where there is an attendant, you are expected to tip that person.

Also in some of the new homes and apartments, fixtures may be somewhat smaller than you are accustomed to (space-saving like the range and refrigerator in kitchen may be smaller than in the States).

Current residents will correct me if this is no longer the custom.

  2. i think our toilets are just fine normal

  3. You were asking about the shelf toilet. Well, let me start staying that the picture from the Italian Guy is not showing a shelf toilet. The toilet on the picture probably was taken in the Netherlands, but it's only used at outdoor events like music festivals.

But you are right: we use the shelf toilet here in the Netherlands, among other types.

In the Netherlands, Germany and elsewhere in Europe it is not uncommon for the toilet bowl to allow f***s to rest on a ledge before being washed away by the flush. The theory for this is that it's better for hygiene and health, because it allows the stools to be visually checked more easily for conditions such as presence of worms, or for its color, which vary depending on diet and health. But if you don't want, you don't have to look of course... ;-)

If you want to see some pictures, just look for 'shelf toilet' in Google: http://images.google.nl/images?q=shelf+t...

  4. Dutch toilets can be different depending on where you are and often you will find that the toilets in many restaurants and tourist areas are similar to those elsewhere in the world but most anyplace else will have the shelf style toilets.  The other difference is often public toilets are set up in their own room rather than the stalls you find in the US giving you more privacy.  Something else you should be aware of is to always bring change when going to a public restroom in The Netherlands since many places have a bathroom attendant and you are paying them for cleaning the restroom.  Here are a couple links that might help and one has a picture of a shelf toilet.

  5. No worries, Normal toilets almost anywhere. The picture of the italian guy is an outside toilet for men taken out of context, it should be "caged" in and a bit more hidden, not in front of anybodies housedoor.....
