Why is TR used less frequently today!?

  1. The short answer is Ethernet "won" because it was cheaper.  Now it is the de facto standard.  Technically token ring was the better technology because there was no such thing as a collision as there was with Ethernet.  Nowadays with the wide adoption of network switches, this is not an issue any more.


  2. Cost of implementation of Token ring networks is much much higher then standard ethernet. The ease of installing ethernet (star) networks is much easier than that of a token ring. Also, new technology such as gigabit ethernet and fiber optic cables make token ring almost obsolete. Also, nowadays, when a computer fails, the switch its connected to automatically removes the failed node. Therefore when a computer crashes it does not affect the whole network.

  3. It's not as fast.TR runs 100M were Ethernet can run in the gigabit range these days.

    And yes, Ethernet was cheaper.
