Is the movie a accurate portrayal of Japan? If not, what are lies it tells?

Also, what scenes were filmed in LA? I couldn't tell, but I heard some were.

Thanks.

  1. You can say it is "accurate."

Of course, the movie really only shows a small piece of Japanese culture and what they do show is not all that dissimilar to the United States (L.A., San Francisco, Atlanta, Miami, etc, etc).

Street drift racing as portrayed in the movie (and other other shows/movies such as Initial D) was pioneered, if not invented, in Japan.  One of the characters, the fisherman on the peer commenting on the main character's driving skills while he was practicing, is one of the pioneers of drift racing and he was making a cameo appearence in the movie.  His name is Keiichi Tsuchiya and is known as the true "Drift King."  Keiichi is typically a technical director/consultant and will make sure the technical aspects of the movie are correct.  As far as culture goes, I know lots of Americans that have gone to school in Japan, either because their legal guardian is in the military or government and are stationed there or business.  Some go to school as study abroad programs or ex-patriots.  The music, clothing, city streets filled with people all seem pretty accurate.  It is not uncommon to see person from other ethnic groups and countries walking around and living in Japan, especially a place like Tokyo.
