Tom Boonen checks his form at the Scheldeprijs
After his terrific performance during the current season, Tom Boonen tried his luck at the Belgian event, Scheldeprijs.
The cyclist is currently checking his form for the Paris-Roubaix and believes that he has never been in a better shape before.
He might have struggled to make an impact during the 202.2 kilometre race but the cyclist has sent a clear message to his Paris-Roubaix opponents.
German cyclist Marcel Kittel of Team Argos-Shimano claimed the top spot by finishing the race in a fastest time of 4 hours, 30 minutes and 52 seconds.
It was clear that Tom was never interested in the overall victory and was only riding to fine tune ahead of the Paris-Roubaix.
“I took it easy in the first part of the race then I worked for the team but when it began to rain, I went in the back of the peloton to avoid problems,” he explained.
"I didn't take risks even in the final because with the rain it was dangerous. The road was really slippery, but I'm happy about my day".
He finished the race at130th position and is now eyeing the tenth biggest race of the season, Paris-Roubaix 2012.
The 31-year-old opened his winning account with an overall victory at the Tour of Qatar and also succeeded at the point’s classifications at the race.
He secured stages at the Paris-Nice, the Tour de San Luis and the Tour of Qatar.
The cyclist registered an overall win at the E3 Harelbeke, Gent-Wevelgem, and the Tour of Flanders, along with a second overall position at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2012.
The Belgian is currently leading the 2012 UCI World Tour rankings with a total number of 266 points in his back pocket.
Simon Gerrans of Team GreenEdge is 56 points behind at the second position with Vincenzo Nibali at the third spot with 182 total points.
Paris-Roubaix is the tenth race at the UCI World Tour Calendar, scheduled on April 8th.
Winner of the race will be awarded with a 100 UCI points while the second and the third position holders will receive 80 and 70 points in the respective order.
