Tom Boonen eyeing his fourth win at the Tour of Flanders 2012
Belgian cycling sensation, Tom Boonen is enjoying a terrific run of form in the 2012 season. He is now targeting the tenth biggest race of the season Paris-Roubaix, as his top goal.
The cyclist is currently leading the UCI World Tour individual rankings as of April 1, 2012, with a total number of 266 points to his credit.
Simon Gerrans of Team GreenEdge is 56 points behind at the second position, with Vincenzo Nibali, Peter Sagan and Alejandro Valverde at the third, fourth and fifth positions.
Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step is currently holding the third spot at the Team’s classifications with Team Liquigas at the first and Team Sky at the second position.
More than 75 % of the total points earned by the team came through Tom, while Terpstra (40), Chavanel (24), Cataldo (15) and Ciolek (4) also made their contributions in the team.
While commenting on the coming stages of the race he noted, "I am still really motivated. Mentally I have no problem".
“I work a lot to be competitive at this period of the season so I really want to try to do my best even on Sunday and fight for the victory.
“I don't know if I will make the recon or not on Friday. The parcours is still the same and I have pretty good experience with it”
“For the rest of the week, starting tomorrow evening, I will start thinking about Paris-Roubaix. This year seems to be the year of the record, but Paris-Roubaix is really a difficult race”.
Paris-Roubaix is one of the oldest cycling races with Josef Fischer as its first winner.
Belgian cyclist Roger De Vlaeminck holds the honour of winning it for a maximum number of four times.
Tom Boonen claimed victories in the 2005, 2008 and 2009 versions of the race and he has a golden opportunity to enter the record books by winning the 2012 version of the race.
It will be interesting to see if Tom receives the honours of bagging the most number of victories by claiming the 2012 version of the French race.
