Tom Boonen furious on Milan-San Remo crash
Tom Boonen of Team Omega-Pharma Quick Step was left shattered during the fourth Grand Tour race of the year.
He was amongst the favourites to claim the top spot during the Milan-San Remo but was unfortunate to have ended up in a disastrous crash.
The Belgian was at the front for most of the race and was looking good to occupy the top podium spot during the Italian race.
Simon Gerrans of Team GreenEdge was the ultimate winner of the race. He was followed by the second and the third place finishers Fabian Cancellara and Vincenzo Nibali.
He finished the race in a competitive time of 6 hours, 59 minutes and 24 seconds to secure his second overall victory of the season. His first came during the UCI inaugural event Santos Tour Down Under.
Luckily, Boonen was not badly hurt as he gets back on his bike to finish the tiring 298 kilometre race. He managed to finish at the 22nd position behind Johnny Hoogerland and Mark Renshaw.
"I had really good legs, maybe the best legs ever in Milano-San Remo. It was always under control and the team did a really good job for me”.
He noted that the team supported him through all the difficult points of the race and he was within the top ten cyclists at the time of the crash.
“I was really good, the team was with me, and we were in good position ready to fight for victory.
“Then, in the first part of the downhill a rider crashed, and I was just behind him. I had to brake, and lost 100 meters”.
Tom is having a terrific season and has already filled his pockets with seven victories in the already.
He claimed the overall victory at the Tour of Qatar and also grabbed the point’s classifications and two stages of the race.
The 31-year-old also secured the seventh stage of the Tour de San Luis, second stage of the Paris-Nice and finished second at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
He is now eyeing the coming races in the week ahead which will off course depend on his physical fitness after the Milan-San Remo crash.
