Tom Boonen happy with the Team Time Trial
Tom Boonen started off the UCI Road World Championships with a perfect start after his heroic performance during the Team Time Trial opening event of the race.
Tom was leading the six-man squad for the Belgian side, Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step and was accompanied by Sylvain Chavanel (France),Tony Martin (Germany), Niki Terpstra (Germany), Kristof Vandewalle (Belgium) and Peter Velits (SVK).
Tom is currently having a terrific season and has filled his bag with quite a lot of victories in the 2012 season.
He is holding the third overall spot after the UCI Road World Tour Individual rankings with a total number of 410 UCI points to his credit.
Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky Procycling is leading the category with 601 points while Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver of Team Katusha secured the second spot with 592 points.
Boonen won the UCI Road Race back in 2005 and is on track to repeat his six year old performance.
Just like 2005, he has now won the Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders and a world title in a same year.
He has also filled his bag with overall victories at the Tour of Qatar and the World Ports Classic along with the first place finishes at the Gent-Wevelgem, E3 Harelbeke, Paris-Brussels and Paris-Nice.
"It's a good season, maybe in the top three in my career but every season is different," said Boonen matter-of-factly.
"I had a few good wins in the spring, I was national champion and now I have a good last part of the season but next Sunday is a different race but it doesn't matter what you've won before. You take the start like everyone else and try to win the race".
"Time trialling is not a Belgian thing you know.. This was one of those victories I never expected to have - first of all, because the race didn't exist".
Team BMC consisting of Alessandro Ballan, Philippe Gilbert, Taylor Phinney, Marco Pinotti, Manuel Quinziato and Tejay Van Garderen fell 3 minutes and 23 seconds behind at the second position.
Team Orica GreenEdge achieved the third spot with Team Liquigas-Cannondale, Team Rabobank, Team Movistar, Team Katusha, Team RadioShack-Nissan, Team Sky and Team Garmin-Sharp securing the next seven spots.
