Tom Boonen not confident for the Amgen Tour of California 2012
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-QuickStep is having a terrific season and the cyclist is expected to resume his absolute form at the coming races of the season.
Boonen’s next appearance will be at the Amgen Tour of California starting this week however, the cyclist has noted that he is not a favourite for the coming event.
The Belgian has filled his bag with numerous victories in the current season after a terrific start at the Tour of Qatar.
He secured an overall victory at the Qatar race and also succeeded at the points classifications of the race along with the stage1 and a stage 4 victory.
The 31-year-old finished first at the Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders, Gent-Wevelgem, E3 Harelbeke and occupied the second spot at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
Tom secured stages at the Paris-Nice and the Tour de San Luis and also bagged stages at the Paris-Nice and the Tour de san Luis.
The cyclist is undoubtedly enjoying the peak of his career and his confidence is sky high especially after the magical performance at the Tour of Flanders.
Boonen has noted that his main goal for the remaining part of the season is the Olympic Games and the World Championships and, his chances at the Californian race are not quite bright.
He told Cyclingnews, "The main ambition is to have a good week here and get racing again. Hopefully Levi [Leipheimer] will be feeling better".
“But for most of the guys it's just getting started again - either they had a break after the Classics or have been altitude training”.
“It's a nice week, it's hard, but it's a good week to get started again and go back to Europe with some good shape," he concluded.
His last participation at the Tour of California was back in 2009 and the cyclist managed to secure the second stage of the race.
The Tour of California started in 2006 with Floyd Landis as the first winner of the race.
Levi Leipheimer holds the honour of succeeding on a maximum number of three occasions while Chris Horner achieved the top spot during the most recent edition of the event.
