Tom Boonen to continue his superb form at the UCI World Championships 2012
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step is enjoying a terrific run of form in the current season.
The cyclist is now looking ahead at the World Championships as his next big goal of the season.
The Belgian is currently leading the UCI Elite Men ranking with a total number of 366 points in his bag.
Vincenzo Nibali is holding the second position with 272 UCI points while Samuel Sanchez, Peter Sagan and Bradley Wiggins are holding the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
The 31-year-old claimed the first overall victory at the Tour of Qatar and also achieved two stages at the race.
He also secured stages at the Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders, Gent-Wevelgem, E3 Harelbeke and finished second at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
While commenting on the 2012 edition of the World Championships, he told Sporza, "We explored the course".
"It might be hard because of the wind and possibly the rain. But I think it is a course for Classics riders”.
“If I am in shape, I can handle it. Another world championship win is something I dream of".
The Belgian achieved the first overall spot at the UCI Road World Championships 2005 and is optimistic to secure his second victory at the race.
Spain is leading the Nations category with a total number of 881 UCI points to its credit with Italy and Belgium at the second and the third positions in the respective order.
The top five Belgians currently leading the category are Tom Boonen (366 points), Jelle Vanendert (104 points), Jurgen Van Den Broeck (72 points), Philippe Gilbert (72 points) and Greg Van Avermaet (60 points).
It is not certain as to who will lead the Belgian side at the 2012 UCI World Championships.
He cited, "Who is leader? It is too early to say. Gilbert and I start at the same level anyway".
"We're really all contemporaries. We have ridden together for 15 years and have not made serious mistakes in a world championship".
The 2012 version of the UCI World Championships is scheduled between September 15to 23 and will be held in Limburg, Netherlands.
