Tom Boonen to make full use of his form at the Milan-San Remo 2012
Tom Boonen has finally found his form after a two-year long struggle. His outstanding performance at the Paris-Nice and the Tour of Qatar was a clear proof of his return to the top level of the sport.
The cyclist had a terrific start to his 2012 season and grabbed his first season’s victory at the 7th stage of the Tour de San Luis.
He claimed the yellow jersey at the Tour of Qatar and also secured the first and the fourth stages of the race.
Boonen finished second during the second stage of the Paris-Nice and achieved the second overall position at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2012.
The Omega Pharma-Quick Step sprinter is now eyeing the first 2012 classics of the season, Milan-San Remo.
The race is scheduled on March 17th and is the fourth World Tour event of the year. The winner will be awarded with 100 UCI points.
The Belgian is certain to fill his pockets with yet another victory at the Italian race .His current form will play a vital role and will help him with his pursuit in Italy.
He told Sporza, "That doesn't give me a guarantee to win, anyway. In the past, I've already been really good without getting a top placing. And I've already been on the podium in years where I had felt less competitive".
The 31-year-old grabbed the podium during the 2007 and the 2010 versions of the Italian race but has not tasted the top position victory at the race.
He noted, "It's hard to predict anything in this race, you don't have to always be the best man to win Milan-San Remo. You can do it on 90-95 percent, too. And that's the percentage that I have right now".
Tom is ranked amongst the best Classics specialist and the best time to prove his abilities is just around the corner. He will compete with some of the renowned Classic riders during the Saturday race.
Philippe Gilbert is also eyeing his first victory of the 2012 season and will give a tough challenge to Boonen.
Australian cyclist Matthew Goss secured the most recent edition of the Milan-San Remo and he is also looking good to make it his second consecutive victory at the Italian race.
