Tom Boonen will skip the Tour de France for his Olympic preparations
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step has noted that he might miss the Tour de France to ensure his peak form ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games.
The cyclist is currently enjoying a terrific season and has filled his bag with several victories in the season already.
The Belgian is currently holding the top spot at the UCI Elite Men category with 366 UCI points to his credit.
Vincenzo Nibali of Team Liquigas-Cannondale is 94 points behind at the second spot with Samuel Sanchez, Peter Sagan and Bradley Wiggins at the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
The cyclist has noted that he is aiming to ride the London Olympics and considers it as a top goal for his 2012 season.
Boonen has also hinted that he might have to skip the Tour de France 2012  in order to be fully prepared for the mega event.
He mentioned, "I think for the Olympic Games it's better for me to not do the Tour, but we are looking at that right now".
"It's harder than everyone expected, but it's a parcours that really suits me. Especially I think the nine laps we do, if it had been shorter (return trip) it would have been even harder”.
“It's a hard circuit, but you have time to recover after the climb.
“Normally if I'm really good I won't get dropped on that climb, but it's harder than everybody expects. There won't be any fast guys left".
The 31-year-old opened his 2012 winning account with an overall victory at the Tour of Qatar and also succeeded at the point’s classifications of the race.
The cyclist also bagged stages at the Tour de San Luis, Paris-Nice and the Tour of Qatar.
He achieved the top overall spot at the Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders, Gent-Wevelgem, E3 Harelbeke and finished second at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2012.
Boonen is currently warming up for the Amgen Tour of California 2012.
The seventh edition of the event is scheduled from May 13-20 and Tom is optimistic to make good use of his supreme form at the event.
