Tom Boonen wins the Gent-Wevelgem 2012
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick step secured yet another victory of the 2012 season.
The cyclist is enjoying his splendid form and has already filled his bag with as many as eight first place finishes in the young season.
His most recent win came during the 234.6 kilometre Gent-Wevelgem. He overcame the mighty Peter Sagan and Matti Breschel to grab the top podium spot.
Boonen finished the race in a quickest time of 5 hours, 32 minutes and 44 seconds and restricted the duo at the second and the third positions.
Oscar Freire Gomez, Edvald Boasson Hagen and Daniele Bennati occupied the fourth, the fifth and the sixth positions respectively.
"I've found back my sprint. I'm not the fastest man in the peloton – that's probably Mark Cavendish – but if everybody is tired then I'm one of the best”, the 31-year old briefed after crossing the finish line.
“I wasn't fully recovered from Friday's race and I wasn't the best in the race but we decided straight away that we would try to get a sprint. The Kemmelberg is too far from the finish to try something there," he concluded.
The Belgian started riding professionally with Team US Postal back in 2002 and left the team after spending a period of one year with the side.
He accepted an offer from Team Quick Step-Davitamon in 2003 and has shown faith in the Belgian squad.
Boonen started his tenth year with Patrick Lefevere’s team and has registered numerous wins in the season already.
The cyclist started his 2012 campaign with an overall victory at the Tour of Qatar. He claimed the first and the fourth stages of the race and also claimed the point’s classifications of the event.
Tom also succeeded during the E3 Harelbeke, Gent-Wevelgem and finished second during the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in the earlier part of the season.
He grabbed the seventh stage of the Tour de San Luis and the second stage of the Paris-Nice 2012.
Team Omega-Pharma Quick Step is amongst the top teams for the 2012 season. It has already secured the overall victories at the Tour de San Luis, Tour of Qatar, Tour of Oman and the
Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen.
