Tom Brady agrees to record contract with Patriots

It was an eventful day for Tom Brady yesterday. Not only was he involved in a car accident in the morning but by the afternoon he was the NFL’s highest-paid player.

Brady and the Patriots agreed to a four-year $72million contract extension that will keep the three-time Super Bowl a Patriot until 2014. The deal is worth a guaranteed $48.5million and will be added to the end of his current contract which expires at the end of this season.

The contract has an average value of $18million, pushing Brady to the top quarterback salary list, ahead of Eli Manning ($16.3million), Carson Palmer ($16.2million), Brett Favre ($16million) and Philip Rivers ($15.3million).

The 33-year-old may not be on the top of the list for long. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay says he plans to make Peyton Manning the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. Manning is in the last year of a seven-year $98million contract and could break the $20million a year mark.

Brady threw for 4,398 yards last season with 28 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.
