Tom Coughlin to stay on as New York Giants head coach
CEO and President of the New York Giants, John Mara, did not have to ponder over whether or not he wanted to keep Tom Coughlin as head coach of the team. In fact, a little while after the Giants were out of the playoffs for the second year in a row, Mara
announced defiantly that Coughlin was coming back for another season.
"I'm obviously disappointed we didn't make the playoffs, but that doesn't mean you blow the whole thing up," Mara said after the Giants beat the Washington Redskins 17-14. However, they failed to get to the playoffs because the Green Bay Packers won their
game against the Chicago Bears.
Mara added, "I think we have a good solid organisation and there are some things we can improve on but he's (Coughlin) still the guy that we want as our head coach." Mara met the current head coach last week and told him that he had the full support of the
ownership. He also said that he did not need to see the result of Sunday’s game to decide the fate of the 64-year-old head coach.
The 10-6 Giants needed to defeat the Redskins, and hope that the Packers lost to the Bears in order to grab the sixth playoff seed. Their slim chances were crushed to nothing after the Packers won.
However, much like their playoff chances, the Giants have let a lot of things slip through their hands; such as the 42 turnovers they made this season. They had a chance at the NFC East crown but blew their 31-10 lead over the Philadelphia Eagles, with Philly
scoring 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter of the game, to defeat the Giants 38-31. The Giants also lost their next game to the Packers 45-17, with a playoff entry at stake.
Despite all that, Mara still feels that players believe in and play for Coughlin. The head coach has had only one losing season since taking over the post in 2004.
