Tom Coughlin will get new contract as New York Giants head coach
Not only is Tom Coughlin coming back as the head coach for the New York Giants, he is also getting a new contract.
One day after the Giants were knocked out of the running for the playoffs for the second consecutive year, Giants Co-owner Steve Tisch said that the team would sit with the coach in the coming weeks and discuss his contract. Coughlin got a four-year contract worth $21 million after he led the team to their first Super Bowl title for nearly two decades in 2008. That deal kept Coughlin with the Giants until 2011.
The team usually does not let their head coaches get to the final year of their contract without renegotiating or letting them go. So if Coughlin is staying, he will be staying for a bit longer than first thought.
"I'm very aware of the timing on Tom's contract, as is John [Mara] and [general manager] Jerry [Reese]," said Tisch. "I don't think John, Jerry and I have ever let any of these issues linger on and in fairness to Tom and the team, this is an issue that will be addressed very, very soon."
If the Giants do give Coughlin a new, extended contract it is not known how long it will be for. They might even decide to give him only one extra year.
"I haven't really given that a lot of thought yet and I don't even know what his (Coughlin) feeling is on it yet," said Giants owner John Mara. "Certainly I will talk to Steve about it and with Jerry. It's all just speculation at this point. I'm not sure where we're going to come out on that. I just know he's (Coughlin) going to be back next year."
Although Coughlin says that he is not thinking about his contract, he wants to keep coaching until he’s “probably 70 or 72.” Coughlin said, "One year at a time. I do one year at a time."
Coughlin is not planning to make any changes to the staff at the moment, but will evaluate them in the off-season.
