Tom Daley and Peter Waterfield secure sixth spot in 10m Synchro Platform – FINA World Championships
British divers, Tom Daley and Peter Waterfield, secured the sixth spot in the Men’s 10m Synchro Platform diving meet on day two of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Sunday, July 17.
Waterfield was coping with influenza, but he decided to take part in the event as he took the decision to compete in the last minutes before the meet commenced. On the other hand, Daley, who lost his father last month, also decided to compete at the World
Championships.
In the 10m metre Synchro Platform final, both Daley and Waterfield gave in their best and earned sixth place honours. Their dive managed to help them secure a total score of 407.46 points. Despite their problems, the duo put up a spirited performance in
the event.
While speaking about the individual performances of British divers in the meet, BBC Sport’s Leon Taylor said, “It was not their day, they were never going to be great with such a disruptive preparation.”
Earlier, Tom Daley won the gold medal in the 10m Platform at the 2009 World Championships, in Rome. Peter Waterfield, on the other hand, secured the silver medal in the corresponding event at the 2004 Olympic Games, in Athens.
Taylor further said, “They should be challenging for medals in a year's time at London 2012. Waterfield's former partner when they won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, on the BBC Red Button.”
He claimed that the performance of British divers in the respective meet was satisfactory, especially when they were coping with sickness and sociological strains, respectively.
In the meantime, Qiu Bo and Huo Liang of China took home the gold medal with a sterling score of 480.03 points. Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein of Germany secured the silver medal with 443.01 points, while Oleksandr Gorshkovozov and Oleksandr Bondar of
Ukraine earned the bronze spot on the podium with a total score of 435.36 points. The pair of David Boudia and Nick Mccrory of United States finished fifth, as the duo scored 420.69 points.
