Tom Huddlestone believes Tottenham can win the league and Marouane Chamakh says he did not dive against Birmingham
Ambition is one thing that can take a team a long way, Tom Huddlestone the Tottenham midfielder has expressed his optimism about his team’s chances this season. Huddlestone said that his team certainly has the potential of winning the league, and there is
no reason why they should not be counted as one of the title contenders.
Tottenham beat Fulham 2-1 on the weekend, and are now just 5 points adrift of League Leaders Chelsea.
This season may be the toughest test of Harry Redknapp’s managerial skills, as he would be rotating his squad to accommodate the domestic as well as UEFA Champions’ League matches. Huddlestone though believes that his team has enough depth and talent to
launch a serious bid for the title this season.
Tom said that it is only a matter of being more consistent over a longer period of time; he added that last season they had targeted ending 4th and they managed to achieve that. So there is no reason why they cannot dream even bigger this season.
Huddlestone said that all big teams that win the league earn hard fought wins out of matches that they probably should have lost. He referred to his team’s win against Fulham over the weekend where he scored the controversial winner, and said that it was a
game probably Fulham deserved to win but we won due to grit and determination.
The England international admitted that it’s a very big call to make at this point, but one never knows and if his team is still in contention after February then they really would go for it.
Meanwhile, talking about another club from London, Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh has rubbished the claims of a dive when he won a penalty for Arsenal in the game against Birmingham. Martin Atkinson was the man in charge and he had no doubts when Chamakh
was brought down and pointed straight to the spot.
The decision turned out to be a crucial one in the context of the match, as Arsenal were trailing Birmingham by 1-0 at the time. Samir Nasri stepped up to take the spot kick, and later it was Chamakh who got the winner to get a 2-1 win for the gunners.
Scott Dann the man who had challenged Chamakh accused the Moroccan of diving after the match, and said that there was barely any contact between the two and Chamakh made a meal of the situation and conned the referee.
The Arsenal striker though continued to plead his innocence, and said that he is not a player who would go down without having any proper contact.
While talking to a newspaper Chamakh said:
"There was definitely contact - the Birmingham defender touched me and then it was all about the ref, to give it or not."
"If they think it is not a penalty then they can be disappointed but for me I was definitely touched and I fell because I was touched otherwise I wouldn't have fallen down in the area”.
The Arsenal front man said that it is normal for a team to feel hard done when they are leading and a decision like that goes against them. Chamakh added that their team boss Arsene Wenger has always told his players to play with integrity and has always
maintained that diving is one part of the game that should never be associated with his team.
While talking on the title chances of Arsenal this season, Chamakh said that his team definitely has every chance of winning the title. He added that they have enough quality in the squad to last the whole season, and there is no reason why they should not
be considered as one of the biggest title contenders this season.
