Tom Jager appointed as swimming coach of Washington State University – Swimming News
Washington State University has appointed Olympic 50m freestyle silver medallist, Tom Jager, as the new Head Coach to the University’s swimming team. Jager is a four-time Olympics medallist and one of the greatest freestyle sprinters of swimming history.
Washington University decided to hire Jager after the retirement of Erica Quinn, last month. The Director to University’s Athletics, Bill Moos seemed very happy after hiring the former Olympic champion and said that it would be a pleasure for his swimming
team to work under the guidance of the former Olympian.
Jager, who is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, earned 13 gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals during his participation at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Pan Pacific Games and the Pan American Games throughout
his career.
Jager expressed his gratitude on his new role and said, "I am excited about the opportunity to coach at one of the best universities in the country. Washington State has a great deal of pride and I look forward to sharing my energy and excitement for the
sport of swimming with the team, the athletic department and the university. It is a privilege to be a Division I coach and an honor to coach the Cougars as we head into the Pac-12, the best swimming conference in the nation. I look forward to the challenge."
Jager’s career started in 1986, where he earned two gold medals in the 50m freestyle and the 4*100m freestyle relay, along with the 100m freestyle bronze at the World Championships. The following year, he earned a gold medal in the 50m freestyle at the Pan
Pacific Games, while he scored a gold medal in the 4*100m freestyle relay and silver, in the 50m freestyle at the 1988 Olympics.
The 46-year-old Jager won two gold medals at the 1991 World Championships that led to his qualification for the 1992 Olympic Games, where he smashed a gold medal in the 4*100m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle.
Furthermore, Moos believes that Jager’s hiring will give a spark to the University’s swimming team and their performance at the Pac-12 Swimming championships will also improve considerably.
