Tom Kite takes the second position after round two of the US Senior Open
Tom Kite, the opening round leader at the US Senior Open, recorded four birdies on the back nine of the course with that same number of bogeys after the turn to settle one stroke behind Lance Ten Broeck on Friday, July 13, 2012.
The interesting facts of his performance on the second day include a birdie on the 17th hole that saw him suffer a double bogey on Thursday, and a bogey on the fourth hole that witnessed him make an eagle on the opening day.
"It's a sadistic game," the 62-year-old Kite said. "It drives us all crazy. As Harvey Penick said, 'It's such an easy game to play, it's just such a hard game to play well.' In a championship like this, we're trying to play very well, and they've given us
a stern test on a golf course that is very tricky. The greens are very severe in a number of places".
In the meantime, Broeck carded a two-under par 68 to take the midway lead in the first big tournament in Michigan, since Buick Open was held, in 2009.
Most of the spectators and players were shocked to see him on top of the leaderboard because of his recent track record on the Tour.
However, Kite’s expressions were totally different and said that he can expect such a thing from him, as he has known him from the mid-1970s.
"I played a bunch of golf with Lance when he was in Austin," Kite recalled. "He's had so much talent for so many years and to a lot of people's minds, didn't take advantage of all the talent that he has".
According to the golf commentators, the course is playing really quick and the fairways are narrowed down compared to the past, in order to challenge the skills of veteran players on the Champions Tour.
The rough is thick, the greens are fast and it is difficult to create birdie chances. That is the reason why many big names on the 50-and-over tour failed to make the cut even at four-over par score including Hale Irwin and Kenny Perry.
