Tom Lehman optimistic about his performance at the d**k's Sporting Goods Open
Tom Lehman aims to record his second victory of the 2012 Champions Tour season when he tees off at this week’s d**k's Sporting Goods Open at the En-Joie Golf Club on Friday, August 17, 2012.
Last year, the same event witnessed him take the share of the 15th position at the end of the tournament. This year, he aims to improve his track record while using his past experience at the venue.
However, the recent form and stats do not support his cause as they did last year. In 2011, he was coming off from three victories and three other top-10 finishes in nine events that he played till then.
This season, he only managed to record a single victory and eight other top-10 finishes in 14 events that he has played so far.
The only thing that supports him is the comeback that he managed to make since April. He has recorded seven top-10 finishes in the last nine tournaments that he played since.
While talking to the Champions Tour official website, he admitted that he got off to a slow start at the beginning of the year. However, he picked up some pace in the second quarter. As a result, he is now in a good position to contend strongly this week
in New York.
“The first few months were very, very poor,” he said. “Since about the middle of April, I've been playing extremely well. I think I've been playing very good golf, every bit as well as last year, over the last three or four months. I'm pretty pleased with
that”.
When asked about his comments on the venue course, he stated that En-Joie is well suited for the players who are good with their drivers. The longer and straighter one can play off the tee, the more chances he gets to go low in the tournament.
“It's a good driver's course,” he said. “I haven't played here all that much, but I've played here enough to know that you've got to hit it pretty straight, and if you do hit it straight, you can set yourself up to get some opportunities on the par 5s, on
the shorter par 4s”.
In simple words, hitting the fairway is the key to success this week. Moreover, putting will play its role of differentiating a player from getting close and winning the tournament.
