Tom Lehman victorious at Mississippi Gulf Resort after brilliant display – Champions Tour news
The Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic finished Sunday and veteran Tom Lehman won the championship by a margin of four shots. He made winning look easy as he completed his final round of the day and cruised to victory.
Lehman, who is also a major championship winner, showed his class on the course during all three rounds. He never looked out of form on any day. His final round score of three-under par, 69 was enough as he emerged victorious.
The 52-year-old Lehman was more than happy with his second Champions Tour title this season. He had two bogeys followed by five birdies on his final day score card. His only two bogeys came on the first par-5 and the closing par-4, 18th. The senior
tour player was happy with his current form because he has been playing well on the Tour.
It was Lehman’s driving accuracy which helped him clinch victory and drastically improved from the first round. He was hitting the ball long off the tee which certainly helped him manage the score well and inch up the leaderboard.
After winning his second title this year, Lehman said, "It was hard-earned victory. As nice as yesterday was, today was rugged with the wind the way it was blowing. I thought some of the holes, especially on the front nine against the wind were really difficult."
Lehman started his day with a one shot lead and was playing alongside Jeff Sluman, who was the first round leader, lost an opportunity which came his way. He was a bit wayward with his approach shots in the final round and carded a disappointing round of
even-par, 72. He lost three shots during the final day which included a bogey and a double-bogey. He also made three birdies but was not enough to match the winner’s score.
Jeff finished the tournament tied at the second spot with Nick Price of Zimbabwe and David Frost of South Africa.
Price started the final round tied for the fourth spot. He improved his position on the final score board by carding a round of five-under par, 67. His score card showed all five birdies and he had no bogey during the final day. Price was impressive during
the last round as he was hitting the ball well off the tee. He finished with a total score of twelve-under par, 204.
Frost managed a rather steady round of three-under par, 69. However, he started the day with two consecutive bogeys. From thereon, he went on to make four birdies and an eagle. The South African had a total of three bogeys on his card. His eagle came on
the par-5, 13th where his approach shot from over 220 yards landed inside a couple of feet from the hole.
Lehman lifted the championship trophy and received the winner’s cheque of US$240,000.
