Tom Lewis and Gary Christian qualify for Transitions Championship - Golf News
Two English golf players, Tom Lewis and Gary Christian, have both qualified for the PGA Tour’s Transitions Championship slated to start at the Salamander Golf & Spa Resort, Palm Harbor, Florida.
Both the players took different paths to reach the field of the Championship. Lewis qualified through the sponsor’s exemption.
Meanwhile, Christian got a chance to play the event as a first alternative after Erik Compton confirmed to withdraw from the event on Tuesday.
According to Lewis, he is lucky to have a chance to play his first ever event on the prestigious PGA Tour. Therefore, he aims to register a good finish at the end of the event to mark a good start on the Tour.
Lewis currently plays on the European Tour and is one of the best emerging young players from England.
When Christian was asked to comment about Lewis, he said, "Lucky bugger. When I was 21 I was in a dry county in Alabama playing junior college golf".
On the other hand, Christian has already played seven events as he is currently playing his rookie year on the PGA Tour.
However, he has not been able to impress his fans yet with his performance on a big tour. His best finish of the season yet came in the Humana Challenge where he tied for the 14th spot.
Christian has spent most of his career playing on smaller tours. However, he joined the Nationwide Tour in 2006 and has been playing regularly since.
Christian has never been much popular among the other golf players because of his absence from the bigger tournament all over the world.
Lewis, who is Christian’s country mate, is also among the players who did not have any idea who Christian is.
"I don't know him," he says politely. "Maybe we'll meet up someday on the golf course".
Yet, Christian believes that he is lucky to be a part of the PGA Tour late at the age of 40.
“I think I appreciate what I have a lot more than a majority of players,” he said. "When you're a rookie at 40, perseverance is obviously a trait of mine. I stand out on courses like this and realize how lucky I am".
The event is scheduled to start from March 15 to 18, 2012, while the practice round started on Monday, March 12, 2012.
