Tom Lewis ready to make his start on the PGA Tour – Golf News
England’s Tom Lewis is ready to make his first start on the PGA Tour as he received a sponsor exemption to the play the Transitions Championship slated from March 15 to 18, 2012.
Lewis appeared in last year’s The Open Championship as an amateur and fired an opening round of 65, the lowest by any amateur in the field.
This year, he again received a chance to play on the PGA Tour. However, he is now playing as a professional and expected to perform even better as compared to the past appearance on the tour.
The Englishman reached the Innisbrook, the venue for the tournament, and did some practice prior to the start of the event.
He expressed his gratitude for the tournament officials for providing him the opportunity to play against the best golf players from all over the world.
According to Lewis, he will try to learn as much as he can from senior players. Moreover, it is a great opportunity for him to prove his mantle on a considerably larger tour compared to the European Tour where he currently plays.
“On Monday I felt they were the quickest greens I have played on,” the 21-year-old from Welwyn Garden said.
He added, “I had an eight-foot putt and putted it off the front. You can't afford to do that - if you're above the hole you can't stop the ball”.
He added, “The course sets up for me well and I am hitting the ball well, so there's no reason I can't perform. But as long as I leave this week with learning a little bit about where my game's at then that's maybe more important than performing”.
Last year, Lewis participated in European Tour’s Portugal Masters and came out of the field as victorious with his outstanding display of the game.
He carded a total of 25 birdies against four bogeys to take two-stroke margin victory over Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
However, he has not been able to record a single top-20 finish since. Yet, he is confident to give a tough time to his competitors at the PGA Tour’s field.
