Tom Lewis ready to turn professional next week after his last bid in the Walker Cup – Golf news
Tom Lewis, the one-round-wonder at the Open Championship, where he fired an unprecedented 65 on opening day, has finally decided to bid farewell to his amateur career. Lewis shot to sudden stardom after pulling in the lowest round ever by an amateur player
in the Open Championship history, but was overpowered by the grizzled veterans of the sport with Darren Clarke later lifting the first major title of his career.
The 20-year-old Englishman will be playing at the Walker Cup this week for the first and last time, and will switch over to professional ranks the very next week. For the moment, the young star is well aware of the pressure that comes along with the professional
badge on his shoulders.
Lewis said, “I understand that. There is a lot of responsibility that comes with being a famous golfer. I saw it for myself at the Open. It is in a way a difficult life, but it is also a great life if you can deal with the attention correctly.”
Lewis remained an eccentric boy right from the start of school and was rarely seen in the company of the rest of the boys. He later discovered a severe reading disability which hampered his prospects of being a good student.
He added, “Yeah, I tried my best, but I didn't see the point of it. I didn't go to a school designed to cope with someone with dyslexia. There was nobody there to help me – I've always wanted to play golf for a living, so school was never going to be a big
part of my life.”
He dreamed of being part of the Irish-English team at the Walker Cup and hoped to defeat the American team one day. He had the option to turn professional right after his first round success at the Sandwich, but decided to delay the procedure for his dream-team,
The Walker Cup.
The young fiery golfer is all set to go places after he turns professional. Already having signed a deal with the sporting management giant, International Management Group (IMG), Lewis has now reserved berths at the Austrian Open and also, at the Dunhill
Links in St Andrews.
Coach, Pete Cowen, who happens to look over top-notch golfers like Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizen, is quite confident Lewis will make it big in the coming future.
The American team for this year’s Walker Cup will boost of a number of fine players on the USGA Amateur circuit and some of them have even gone to win a title on either the PGA Tour or its subsidiary, The Nationwide Tour. The Americans have won three of
the last Walker Cup showdowns and will be stepping on the course brimming with confidence.
