Tom Lewis regrets not performing well in Tavistock Cup and Transitions Championship in Florida
Englishman Tom Lewis will be part of the field at this week’s Sicilian Open and is hoping that his experience at Tavistock Cup and the Transitions will help him immensely to grab the latest European Tour title.
Young Lewis will be playing the tough Verdura Golf Course and Resort, facing the breezy Mediterranean.
He will be pitched against a strong field of the likes of Matteo Manassero, Graeme Storm, Raphael Jacquelin, Nicolas Colsaerts, Jose Manuel Lara, Anthony Wall and many others.
Lewis said, “This year is all about learning what works for me. Sometimes you have to play three or four weeks in a row, which isn’t ideal for me because physically I’m not yet strong enough to control my swing for four weeks in a row”.
The young Englishman has already done his homework and played the nine-hole practice round yesterday to acclimatise himself with the tricky Verdura.
He played alongside Chelsea and Italy football legend Gianfranco Zola in the Pro-Am.
Jamie Donaldson, who finished for a strong joint third last week in Morocco and raging Belgian Colsaerts were also present on the course.
Lewis said that the greens on Verdura are tougher than what he first anticipated and are a bit slower.
He added, “It plays quite firm because it’s still a new course, and the greens are a little slower but they’re very nice to putt on”.
Lewis regretted that he was not able to perform well in the US last month, regardless of the fact that he loves to play in Florida.
He said, “It’s a shame I didn’t play as well as I’d liked in Florida, but it was still a pleasure to play there”.
Lewis shot to fame last year when he pulled in a stunning 65 on the opening round of the Open Championship playing as low amateur.
He surged to the top of the leaderboard and has the accolade of shooting the lowest round by any amateur in the history of the event.
Sicilian Open will be Lewis’ fifth start on the European Tour. He won the Portugal Masters last year, in October, in only the third start on the tour and is hoping to carry on with his meteoric rise to stardom.
