Tom Lewis shot 76 in the first round of the Volvo China Open, finished in the danger zone, struggling hard to make the cut.
The 21-year-old English professional golf player faced tough challenges on Thursday, at the Binhai Lake Golf Club in Tianjin, China.
He started the round early in the morning, made three consecutive pars on the first three holes. Then he carded a double-bogey and dropped to the lowest leaderboard positions.
On the 5th hole, he somewhat improved his performance and registered a birdie. Then, he also added two more bogeys and one birdie, ended the first nine holes of the course by shooting 38.
He was unable to impress his worldwide fans and spectators by showing a mediocre performance. He started the back nine holes again with a par and made three bogeys till the 16th hole.
Lewis finished the first round by making a birdie on the 18th. His final scores were 4-over 76 and he finished tied for the 143rd position at day-end.
He turned professional in 2011, and since then, won the European Tour staged event Portugal Masters in his rookie year. His winning margin was two strokes and he defeated the top professional Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
Matthew Baldwin finished on the top of the leaderboard. He scored seven impressive birdies and displayed an amazing performance throughout the day. He delivered his second best scores and finished a bogey-free round.
The defending champion Nicolas Colsaerts scored 4-under 68 and finished only three strokes behind the leader. He competed well for the title, but due to one bogey, he finished three behind.
Gary Boyd also stunned the spectators with impressive birdies. He shot 6-under 66, by making five tremendous birdies and an eagle. He also carded one bogey on the 6th hole and finished one behind Baldwin.
Hence, the competition is tough and all the players are aiming a victory at the $3 million purse event. Lewis will continue his second round at 6.55am and currently he is in the danger zone.
He can only make the cut at the Volvo China Open if he saves bogeys on Friday, in the second round. Remaining at and under par most of the time will definitely help.
