Tom Lewis the one-round-wonder at Open Championship now part of the team at Walker Cup
English amateur player Tom Lewis, who stunned the world with his heroics in the opening round of the Open Championship, has now earned a spot at the approaching Walker Cup at the end of this season. The 20-year-old will be playing on the Great Britain and
Ireland team along with ten other players who will make an attempt to win back the trophy from the Americans.
Lewis will be teaming up with nine other players under the captaincy of Nigel Edwards and the team will include several of the top players from the amateur circuit. Rhys Pugh is the youngest of all the players at 17 while none of the players on the team
are over 24 years of age, making it one of the youngest teams from the English front.
Lewis took the reins of the Open Championship in the first round, becoming the only amateur player in 43 years to lead any round in the Open. He was the first round co-leader with his impressive five-under, 65 and was awarded the silver medal for being the
Low Amateur in the event.
The young Englishman who hails from Welwyn Garden City had options to turn professional right after that but he stayed as an amateur for the sole reason of playing at the Walker Cup.
"I don't think I'll be turning pro right away. I think I've got things still to learn, since I've just lost by about 20 strokes this week. But I will sit down with my team and work out what is best for my future," Lewis said after his first round at Sandwich
last month.
"The Open has been amazing for me. The first day was wonderful. I couldn't have asked for more. It was a shame the last three days I haven't played anywhere near as good as I had hoped but to win the silver medal is a great honor," he added.
Walker Cup is scheduled from September 10-11 at Royal Aberdeen. The US team will be launching some of the finest players from their amateur brigade including NCAA champion Patrick Cantlay of UCLA and U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State.
Some players on the team have already won a title on the professional circuit and have been waiting to challenge the English players at the Walker Cup before turning professional.
