Tom Meeusen wins the Superprestige Hoogstraten 2012
Tom Meeusen of Team Telenet-Fidea won the Superprestige Hoogstraten 2012. The race was organised on February 5th and the Belgian claimed his second consecutive win of the season.
He finished the race in a total time of 58 minutes and 59 seconds to grab the first position.
Kevin Pauwels, Sven Nys, Sven Vanthourenhout and Radomir Simunek achieved the second, third, fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Meeusen told VT4 during a post-race interview, "Honestly, those two were the strongest men in the race today. I didn't want to mix in their battle in the last lap but they were watching each other so bad that it was a golden opportunity for me to go for
the win”.
He briefed, “Yesterday I felt like I was the best man in the race but today that certainly wasn't the case. I'll try to continue my season like this and convert my excellent form into results".
Nys was happy with his third place finish as it helped him claim the top podium position in the overall classifications.
He explained that winning the race was less important as the overall standing was his main focus.
Sven Nys is still leading the overall classifications with a total number of 91 points. He has a lead of four points over the second position holder, Kevin Pauwels.
Zdenek Stybar, Bart Aernouts and Tom Meeusen currently stand in the next four positions.
Vantornout of Team Sunweb-Revor stated that he hates to race on the icy tracks and mentioned that it is very frustrating to ride such races.
He explained that their first priority was to ensure that their leader, Kevin remains at the front.
On the other hand, Daphny van den Brand of Team AA Drink won the Elite Women category of the race, with Nikki Harris and Pavla Havlikova claiming the second and the third positions.
Laurens Sweeck finished the Under 23 Men’s category in the fastest time of 47 minutes and 48 seconds to grab the first position.
Belgian rider Tim Merlier secured the second spot with a deficit of 2 seconds, Mike Teunissen finished third.
Mathieu Van der Poel was the quickest amongst the Junior Men, with Wout Van Aert and Quentin Jauregui claiming the second and third positions.
