Tom Shields and Markus Rogan win 100m butterfly and 400m IM finals in the Speedo Grand Challenge
Tom Shields has won the Men’s 100m butterfly title in the 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge, held at the William Woollett Aquatic Centre in Irvine, on May 28.
Shields completed his distance in 53.40 seconds, while Clement Lefert of Trojan was placed second in a time of 54.18 seconds and Erich Peske of De Anza Cupertino wound-up third in 54.84 seconds. Chase Bloch of Class earned the fourth place honour in 55.06 seconds in the respective meet.
Tom Shields was relieved after the race, as he had to face stiff competition from his rivals in the meet.
On the other hand, Markus Rogan of Trojan claimed the Men’s 400m Individual Medley title with a winning time of 4 minutes and 19.84 seconds.  
Matt Thompson of Stanford took the silver medal with a time of 4 minutes and 26.56 seconds, while Ben Hinshaw of Palo Alto settled for bronze in a time of 4 minutes and 31.24 seconds. Chad La Tourette of Mission Viejo was placed fourth in 4 minutes and 36.83 seconds.
In the 200m Individual Medley and 100m breaststroke finals, Jasmine Tosky of Palo Alto captured the golden crowns, along with a gold medal in the 200m freestyle final.
In the Women’s 100m butterfly meet, Katerine Savard of Club de Natacion captured the golden crown with a sterling time of 58.48 seconds. Felicia Lee of Stanford grabbed the silver title with a time of 59.88 seconds and Lyndsay De Paul of Trojan settled third in a time of 1 minute and 00.76 seconds.
The Men’s 200m backstroke title was secured by Trojan’s swimmer Alex Lendrum with a time of 2 minutes and 01.15 seconds, while Matt Thompson of Stanford was placed second in 2 minutes and 03.74 seconds. Nick Trowbridge of Palo Alto wound up third in a time of 2 minutes and 05.42 seconds. Lendrum was thrilled with his performance in the 200m backstroke final.
The 400m freestyle title was taken over by another Trojan swimmer, Mads Glaesner, with a winning time of 3 minutes and 52.28 seconds. Dominik Meichtry claimed the silver medal in a time of 3 minutes and 55.18 seconds and Chad La Tourette of Mission Viejo snared bronze in a time of 3 minutes and 55.33 seconds. Sam Metz of Cal wound up fourth in 3 minutes and 58.86 seconds.
Day two of the Speedo Grand Challenge ended with the exciting performances of swimmers like Tom Shields and Markus Rogan. It is left to see which swimmer lives up to the expectations on the third and final day of the championship.
