Tom Slingsby overjoyed after winning gold medal in 2012 London Olympic Games
Final day of the Laser competitions of the 2012 London Olympic Games was yet another tussling day for the fleet as they participated in the opening race of the day under ideal wind conditions.
The breeze was gusting around the Weymouth and Portland racing area up to 16 knots which was enough for the sailors to complete three scheduled races.
Former five-time World Championship winner, Australia’s Tom Slingsby dominated the fleet standings from the beginning of the Olympic regatta and was able to claim the gold medal in the end compiling 43 points.
The Aussie Laser sailor showed great determination from the start and managed to stay on the leading podium place.
He launched his boat into the Weymouth waters on the final day with the confidence to hit the medal run because his fellow sailors were quite at a distance from him as far as the fleet standing were concerned.
He grabbed two bullets and an 18th finish on the last day of Laser proceedings and won the gold medal. The Australian sailor was quite excited over winning the Olympic gold medal.
He spoke to the local media, “Who would be feeling better in the world right now? No-one. I've worked for 12 years to get there. I put everything I had into it and I've done it. I couldn't be happier.”
