Tom Watson confirms his participation in the Senior Open Championship – Golf news
Tom Watson has confirmed his participation in this year’s Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, exactly 30 years after his victory at the Open Championship. The tournament is scheduled to start from July
25, 2013.
The tournament is set to be staged at the prestigious Royal Birkdale, featuring some of the best players from the European Senior Tour, as well as from the US Champions Tour.
Royal Birkdale is the same venue that saw the American star taking home the Claret Jug. Also, this is the venue that witnessed him bagging his last of the five Open Championship titles in 1983. That is the reason
why he is confident to add the third Senior Open title to his resume.
He now has the opportunity to replicate his 1983’s performance to stun his opponents, when the prestigious event comes to this venue for the first time in its history.
Talking to the European Senior Tour’s official website, he said that he may not be able to record a victory in the tournament. Yet, he will try to give his best, in a bid to record a string finish in the tournament.
“I have great memories of my win at Birkdale and I will certainly relive those memories when I get back there for The Senior Open this summer,” he said. “That’s the fun thing about being my age – I get to relive
some of the successes that I have had, and Royal Birkdale is one of my favourite courses.
“I may not be able to do it again, although it is certainly my intention to go back to Birkdale and try to do it again.” He added. “Winning at another course I’ve won The Open at would be nice, wouldn’t it?”
In the meantime, the former world number one, Fred Couples, is relishing the opportunity to return to the Senior Open Championship as the defending champion, courtesy of his victory in the 2012 edition of the
event.
According to the tournament officials, the tickets for the tournament are now on offer for just £70, and can be purchased before June 30, 2013.
