Tom Watson makes it to round 3 at the British Open
Tom Watson birdied the final hole of the second round to make the cut at The Open Championship on Friday, July 20, 2012.
The five-time British Open champion started off with six pars in a row, followed by a birdie on the seventh hole. However, the score returned to even-par once again due to a bogey on the very next hole.
Afterwards, he scored another three bogeys over the next nine holes to go four-over for the round. However, an amazing putt on the final hole of the day kept his hopes alive for the halfway cut.
Therefore, at the end of the round, he was among the players who qualified for the final two rounds at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club.
"It means a great deal to play against the kids again, one more time,” the 62-year-old veteran American said. “I have visions of someday having the same days as I had as a kid at my age. It would be great to see everything go in the hole again".
Watson is one of the greatest players that the game of golf has ever produced. Watson has won all the major championships except the PGA Championship.
He came close to completing the major grand slam in 1978 when he finished second in the fourth major of the year.
Otherwise, he would have been listed in the league of Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen and Tiger Woods, all of whom have won all the major championships at least once in their careers.
He is currently playing his second major championship of the year, as he also participated in the Masters Tournament where he missed the cut after carding rounds of 77 and 74.
Therefore, he looked really happy after he made the final putt of the day and was applauded by the spectators present in the galleries of the 18th green.
In the meantime, Brandt Snedeker surged to the top of the leaderboard with another bogey-free round of four-under par 66. He also tied the British Open record of going bogey-free in the opening two rounds along with a 10-under par overall score.
