Tom Watson sets sights on 2014 Ryder Cup captaincy
Tom Watson is not playing the best golf these days, as he did not put up a commanding show at the Australian Open. However, what is on his mind is a Ryder Cup captaincy slot.
Watson said that it would be an honour for him to captain the 2014 US Ryder Cup team in Scotland.
The American has had a very successful career. Tom has 39 PGA Tour victories till date and, more than that, he is an eight-time major winner as well. This record speaks for itself, reflecting he is an experienced campaigner.
PGA of America will be announcing the 2014 Ryder Cup captain by next month, no name has surfaced yet but Watson’s desire to lead the team may work in his favour.
Watson has previously captained the Ryder Cup team in 1993, where he led them to victory at Belfry, in England. Since that victory, Americans have just won only twice in this competition, in 1999 and 2008.
"It would be a great honor if I got tapped on the shoulder," Watson said in Sydney, where he did not play as well as he would have liked.
"93 was the last time I've been to a Ryder Cup. I'd like to go back as captain. That would be cool".
If Watson is awarded the captaincy for the second time, he will become the first repeat captain after Jack Nicklaus in 1987.
David Toms is a very obvious choice so far, because he won the 2001 PGA Championship and will be turning 46 next month.
Apart from that, Toms is very experienced when it comes to team events, he was part of three Ryder Cup teams and four Presidents Cup teams.
If it is not Toms, then surely it will be Tom who will be leading US Ryder Cup team in 2014. The fact that Watson won four of his five Open Championships in Scotland can go in his favour, as the 2014 Ryder Cup will take place in Gleneagles.
Watson has played in four Ryder Cups, 1977, 1979, 1983 and 1989. Larry Nelson’s name is also being mentioned in the press, but most probably, it will be Tom or Toms.
