Tom Whitaker prevails in wave-starved Round 3 heat at ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
Australia’s Tom Whitaker managed to advance through into the fourth round (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro after barely getting enough score to clinch top honours in the 23rd heat of Round 3
(Round of 96) that continued at the beach-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Wednesday, May 2.
Hawaii’s Hank Gaskell successfully extended his life in the competition as well after securing second-place position in the 23rd heat to accompany Whitaker into the next round.
The intensity and thrill featured in the battles between the top local and international had kept the crowd at the beach quite entertained. Throughout the day, the clean two-to-four foot waves gracing the event site offered surfers a handful of potential
scoring opportunities during their bout for survival in the race for the prestigious event title and other rewards that were up for grabs.
The 23rd heat of Round 3 pitted Whitaker against Gaskell, Brazil’s Willian Cardoso and Venezuela’s Jonathan Gonzalez in a four-man battle.
As the heat kicked-off, Whitaker did not get off to the best of starts. The sea had suddenly become wave starved, refusing to show generosity to the surfers. Refusing to let the conditions get the better of him, the Australian surfer continued to search
for an opening, hoping for a bit of luck to help him. His perseverance eventually paid off as a juicy wave made an appearance. Wasting little time, he charged towards it to unload a series of quick turns and powerful carves. The effort earned him an 8.00 to
put him in a dominant position. After another long and determined hunt, he managed to add an additional 6.03 points to his account to get to a heat-total of 14.03 points. The score proved to be a decisive one, earning him victory and thus taking him through
into the next round.
Gaskell collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a heat-total of 12.67 points. The score proved sufficient to put him in runner-up place, thus add him to the Round 4 line-up.
Cardoso finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.27 points, which included a 6.17 and 3.10-point wave, while Gonzalez finished fourth after reaching a two-wave total of 7.24 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the latest ASP
PRIME event.
