Tomas Berdych and Janko Tipsarevic to participate in Chennai Open – Tennis News
Two of the top 10 players in men’s tennis, Tomas Berdych and Janko Tipsarevic, have confirmed that they play next season’s Aircel Chennai Open.
The biggest tennis tournament of India will be held at the outdoor hard courts of the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu from December 31 to January 7. Only qualifying matches will start on December 31 and main draw matches
will be held from January 2.
Currently ranked sixth in the world, Berdych will be taking part in the Aircel Chennai Open for just the second time in his career. The Czech star reached the semi-finals on his debut appearance at this event last year, losing
to the Swiss number two, Stanislas Wawrinka, in straight sets 4-6, 1-6.
Berdych did not feature at this ATP World Tour 250 hard court event this year. The Czech player captured a total of two titles in this season, having an overall 60-22 win/loss record. The 27-year-old made it to the season ending
championships but could not qualify for the knockout stage in London, as he lost two of his three round robin matches.
Tamil Nadu Tennis Association’s President, M A Alagappan, said, "We are pleased to announce the participation of two top-10 players. Tomas Berdych had a huge fan following in India after he reached the semi-finals in 2011. He has
had a great year thus far and we are sure he will continue his winning streak in Chennai.”
On the other hand, Tipsarevic will come to the event for the fifth successive season. Featuring there for the first time, the Serbian star lost to France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu in the first round but he reached the title match in this season.
Alagappan added, "Tipsarevic is a regular to Chennai and loves to play here. He has been doing well in 2012 and I am sure his presence will ensure that fans will get to see some fantastic games being played during the tournament.
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome him to India."
Tipsarevic also qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in result of Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal but he lost all of his three matches at the season finale.
