Tomas Berdych and Ryan Harrison qualify for the third round at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open
Tomas Berdych beats Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-1
World number 7 Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic prevailed over world number 127 Lukasz Kubot of Poland in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday.
The Czech needed a single break of serve in the opening set, winning it 6-4. He hit 6 aces and 2 double faults in the first set. Berdych did not face a single break point in the opening set. Whereas, Kubot saved 2 of the 3 break
points he faced in the first set.
After winning the first set, the 25-year-old did not look back and broke his opponent three times in the second set to win it 6-1.
Berdych hit 67 per cent of the first serves in the second set, winning 83 per cent of the points on them. On the other hand, his opponent hit 55 per cent of the first serves and won 45 per cent of the points on them. The match
lasted for 1 hour and 13 minutes.
The Czech is drawn to meet world number 29 Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil in the third round. The Brazilian beat world number 60 Benjamin Becker of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(5) in the second round.
Berdych leads Bellucci 1-0 in the head-to-head record between the two players. He defeated the Brazilian in three sets 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(3) in the quarterfinal at the Brisbane International last year, in the only meeting between
these two.
Ryan Harrison defeats Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 7-6(4)
Ryan Harrison of USA ousted Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(4) to move to the third round of the championship. It took the American 1 hour and 45 minutes to beat his opponent.
The first set saw both players breaking each other’s serve on number of occasions. However, Harrison broke his opponent three times in the opening set, winning it 6-3. The 18-year-old hit 3 aces and 54 per cent of the first serves
in the first set.
In the second set, both players broke each other’s serve twice and levelled the score at 6-6, forcing a tie-break. Harrison claimed two mini-breaks in the tie-break, winning it 7-4. The American saved 6 of the 8 break points he
faced in the second set.
Talking to the journalists after the match, Harrison said, “Hopefully it’s not stopping now. I want to keep going as long as I possibly can. I definitely have full belief in myself no matter who I play, so I'm going to take each
match as it comes and try to do my best every time.”
The right handed will face world number 37 Milos Raonic of Canada in the third round.
