Tomas Berdych beats Carlos Berlocq to advance to the fourth round at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open
Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic defeated Carlos Berlocq of Argentina in their third round match at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open. The match took place on Monday at Crandon Park, Miami and lasted for two hours and fourteen minutes. Berdych performed extraordinarily well and succeeded in the match in straight sets 7-6(8), 7-5.
Berdych’s recent appearance was at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open where he reached the fourth round outplaying Polish Lukasz Kubot and Thomaz Bellucci in the second and third round, before losing to Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in three straight sets.
This is Berdych’s seventh appearance at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open. His career best performance for the event came last year, when he moved it into to the finals defeating Thiemo de Bakker, Horacio Zeballos, Roger Federer, Fernando Verdasco and Robin Soderling in the semi-finals. In the finals Berdych confronted Andy Roddick of United States and lost to the ultimate defending champion in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
Having kicked off the event on Saturday, the Czech carried his winning momentum through to the fourth round, defeating Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo and Carlos Berlocq in the previous rounds.
In the first set Berdych hit four aces and 54 per cent of the first serves. Though he double faulted three times but still he had a higher conversion rate as opposed to Berlocq. Berdych managed to pull in 80 per cent points on his first serves, while Berlocq followed closely with a similar 78 per cent on 71 per cent first serves. Berlocq succeeded in converting breakpoint opportunities into lucky chances with a 67 per cent lead over Berdych’s 50 percent.
Banking on his winning percentage of first serves, Berdych moved past the first set with a 7-6(8) score.
In the second set, Berdych hit three aces and committed two double faults. He put down 79 percent gain on his first serves. Berdych faced 6 break point opportunities and luckily converted 4 of them. On the other hand, Berlocq delivered 3 aces and 64 per cent of the first serves. He converted 55 per cent of his first serves which was a lot lower than his opening set first serves. Berdych capitalized on his first serves winning rate and stole the second set with a 7-5 score line.
He will next meet Florian Mayer of Germany in the fourth round of the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open. Berdych has a 3-0 head-to-head record under his belt.
