Tomas Berdych knows match against Novak Djokovic would be a big challenge for him – Tennis News
Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych believes that he will face the toughest of tasks against the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
The Czech number one will meet the top seeded Serbian star in his third match of the season ending championships at the indoors courts of O2 Arena in London on Friday.
Berdych made sure that semi-finalists of Group A are not decided before the last day of its round robin matches, as he defeated the world number seven, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, in his second match on Wednesday. On the same
day, Djokovic defeated the third seed, Andy Murray, in a thriller to maintain his perfect record.
When Berdych was asked to comment on his next contest against Djokovic in the post match press conference, he said, “I don't like mathematics at all. I will try to play tennis, and that's it. I will try my best. But Novak just
[has] shown how great he's playing right now and that he deserve to be [the] No. 1 player in the world. It's a huge challenge for me. But the other hand, he already has two wins, so let's see what's going to be in that last match.”
Now, the situation is that all the four players in Group A have played two matches each. Djokovic has two wins, whereas, Murray and Berdych have one each, with Tsonga being the only winless contender in their pool.
The home favourite, Murray, will play Tsonga in his final round match on Friday. If Berdych wins against Djokovic and Murray beats Tsonga, then the Czech, Serbian and Brit will have two victories each, so the two semi-finalists
from this Group would be decided after the games calculation. On the other hand, if Berdych loses to Djokovic and Murray has same fate against Tsonga, then Djokovic will qualify and be replaced by Tsonga in the games calculation.
Berdych, who is featuring at the ATP World Tour Finals for third year in a row, has now won 60 matches in this season and lost just 21.
